For me, George Jones was the quintessential voice of country music. Steve and I were in Nashville on the day he died. We had just crossed the street and were in front of Tootsie’s when a reporter stopped a couple of guys next to us and asked them what they thought about the news that George had passed. It was a terrible way to find out, and we were stunned and greatly saddened by the news. We proceeded to request Jones’ songs in every honky-tonk up and down lower Broadway. This song was a number one C&W hit for him in the spring of 1962. It’s been covered by others, including Anne Murray who went to number one with it as well in 1974. James Taylor does a great version as well. Another favorite version was rendered by Leon Russell on his Hank Wilson’s Back album. It’s a true country keepsake, and never gets old for me.
