From the recording Daddy

This song written by Jay Miller was an answer song to Hank Thompson’s 1952 hit ‘The Wild Side of Life’.  Kitty Wells recorded it in 1952, and had the first #1 single on Billboard’s C&W charts for a solo female vocalist.  Not only did it establish Kitty Wells’ as country music’s first major female star, but it also helped pave the way for every female country star who followed.
I love singing this song on its own merits, but also appreciate including such a ground-breaking traditional country song.  I hope you’ll enjoy listening to it as well!

Lyrics

As I sit here tonight the jukebox playing
Your song about the Wild Side of Life
As I listen to the words you are saying
It brings memories when I was a trusting wife

It wasn’t God who made honky tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men think they’re still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong

It’s a shame that all the blame is on us women
It ain’t true that only you men feel the same
From the start most every heart that’s ever broken
Was because there always was a man to blame

It wasn’t God who made honky tonk angels
As you said in the words of your song
Too many times married men think they’re still single
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong
That has caused many a good girl to go wrong
