Story

When I was a little girl, I spent a good deal of time during the summers with my maternal grandparents, Noel and Ruth Taylor at their place just west of Alva, Oklahoma.  I explored the ‘canyons’ and land around their place every day. I adored their black Lab, Scamp, and she was always by my side.

Like most little girls, I dreamed of having a pony to ride.  There were some horses pastured on their land for a while, and one was very sociable.  He would hang his head over the barbed wire fence and let me pet him and feed him grass clippings. I called him Friendly. Scamp was a little jealous, and leaned against me to remind me she was there too.

My mother shot this photo when she was taking a summer photography class at Northwestern State College.  I've always loved it.  It brings back sweet memories.

Lyrics

When I grow up I want a pony

I’m gonna ride her from dusk ‘til dawn

I’m gonna brush her mane and give her sugar cane

Keep her in safe from the storm

If I had a pony

Well I wonder could I be your girl

When I grow up I want a baby

I’m gonna name it after Del McCoury

And I sure won’t mind if it cries all night

Just as long as it looks like me

If I had a baby

Well I wonder could I be your girl

Yodel ay ee oh

You rock my world

Yodel ay ee oh

When I grow up I wanna be your girl

When I grow up I want a cowboy

Dust all over his jeans

With a horse named Jack and a ten gallon hat

He is nice but he looks so mean

If you was a cowboy

Well I wonder could I be your girl

Yodel ay yodel oh

You rock my world

Yodel ay yodel oh

When I grow up I wanna be your girl

When I grow up I’ll be a lady

All my rings will be made of gold

I’ll put flowers in my room and wear perfume

I won’t listen to rock ‘n’ roll

If I was a lady

Well I wonder could I be your girl

Yodel ay yodel oh

You rock my world

Yodel ay yodel ay yodel oh

When I grow up I wanna be your girl

When I grow up I want a pony

When I grow up I want a baby

When I grow up I want a cowboy

When I grow up I’ll be a la-a-a-a-a-a-dy
